Hi, my name is Garrett Hendrickson, and it’s my dream to own and operate an independent design studio. This publication is the first step - I’m building the knowledge to inform my future work. So, really, you’re joining me on my journey to build a business, learn about design, and figure it all out as I go. My promise is simple: as I learn, you learn too, through free articles for everyone and even more benefits for paid subscribers.
Through careful observation and thoughtful experimentation, each article will tackle a unique area of design. Covering graphic design themes, typography, color, shape, interior design, architecture, and more, we’ll explore how these disciplines overlap to influence culture, marketing, branding, and the human mind.
Where did certain designs originate, and how do they impact life today? How will design principles evolve, and what does that mean for art and design as a whole? Through this series of essays, I plan to look backward, imagine forward, and learn the theory of design alongside you.
In this publication, you’ll see two recurring segments:
Teaching article > With research and analysis, I’ll dive into design tactics, theory, and principles to understand why certain designs work.
Design Study > Going back in time, I’ll explore an historic art/design movement to understand the origin of design tactics that fuel the industry today.
